Kanipila (jam session) runs from 5:30pm-12:30am.

Where: Fresh Café, 831 Queen St (just Ewa of Ward Ave)

Why: The main purposes of this event relate to youth, local musicians, and charter schools:

1) Showcase youth talent, and link aspiring youth with mentors and role models in the music industry, who can inform and inspire our youth to best develop their skills and talents, and pursue their passion and goals.

2) Showcase and support local artists whose lyrics and musical styles are unique to Hawai’i, i.e. traditional Hawaiian and local island music.

3) Raise awareness of and support for Hawaiian charter schools, by highlighting their successes despite financial struggles, and using net proceeds from the event to buy music instruments, to be used by artists of the Mana Maoli Collective when doing school visits and mentorships at O’ahu charter schools.

Additional Info: Our ‘Maoli Music’ program is primarily volunteer-driven. At the core of this program is the Mana Maoli Collective, which refers to hundreds of pro, underground and youth artists who donate their time and talent to Mana Maoli CD’s, concerts, school visits, music mentorships and after-school programs, all in support of over a dozen culture, community and environment-based Charter Schools in Hawaii.

Free music workshops for youth 18 and under will be provided by John Cruz (songwriting), Liko Martin (Mele Ku’e), and Paula Fuga (singing). Preference will go to those who register in advance. Youth or parents can register by emailing manamaoli@yahoo.com with youth name, age, and workshop preference.
